Grow Your Skills
Volunteering can be a great way to gain new skills or strengthen some you already have. When you review your work history, do you notice any areas that you should work on? Maybe a former supervisor has suggested that your public speaking skills could use some improvement. Public speaking is a skill that's useful in most any occupation.
Once you've identified an area or two where you'd like to grow, think of activities where you could possibly pick up a useful skill while you're sharing your time and talents with others. A local Toastmasters club is a low-cost way to polish your speaking skills and enjoy a social outing - and it's great place to network. Volunteering to read aloud to children in a hospital or seniors in a convalescent center is another way to practice speaking in front of an appreciative audience.
